FSA ID
Federal Student Aid ID
What is the FSA ID used for?
In order to apply for Federal Student Aid, you will need to create an FSA ID account so that you will be able to sign the FAFSA electronically.
Who needs to get an FSA ID?
An FSA ID will be required for the student and both parents (biological or adoptive) if they are married to each other and filed taxes separately or are not married to each other and live together. If parents filed taxes jointly, only one parent will need an FSA ID. For other living situations, use this form to determine who will need an FSA ID.
How do I Apply?
Request an FSA ID at https://studentaid.gov/fsa-id/create-account/launch. In order to create an FSA ID you will need:
- Social Security Number
- Personal Email address (not your PPS email)
- Mobile phone number
Tips for Creating an FSA ID
Create your FSA ID early! Your FSA ID cannot be used until it is matched with the Social Security Administration. Plan to create your FSA ID at least a week before you plan to start your FAFSA.
Enter your information accurately. Your information will be verified by the Social Security Administration. Making a mistake—especially with your social security number, birthdate, or legal name—will cause delays.
Write down the information you used to create an account and set up your FSA ID. You will need your FSA ID every year you apply for student aid, so be sure you can remember all of the important information associated with your FSA ID.
An email address and mobile phone number can only be associated with one FSA ID. Students and parents cannot use the same email address or mobile phone number.
You must have access to your email and mobile phone when creating your FSA ID and filing the FAFSA in order to set up two-factor verification. Once verified, your email and/or mobile phone number can be used to retrieve your username, reset your password, or unlock your account. A verified email or mobile phone can also be used in place of your username.
